Institute of Geodesy and Geodynamics

(Fangshan Satellite Laser Ranging Station)Introduction

The Institute of Geodesy and Geodynamics is one of the famous institutes in China, which has been focused on theory study and applications of geodesy. The institute can also carry on projects in survey engineering.

The institute has carried out fruitful researches in different fields, such as the establishment of geodetic datum in Chinasatellite geodesy gravity measurements and earth’s gravity fieldspirit leveling and geodynamics. The institute has been granted several technical awards at the state-level and province-level. Many technical problems in fundamental surveying were solved by the institute, which contributed to the theory study and applications of geodesy in China.

Since 1970’s, several projects haven been finished by the institute, such as the height determination of Everestthe adjustment of astro-geodetic networkthe establishment of Xi’an 1980 geodetic coordinate systemthe establishment of China 1985 Gravity Base Net and the design and short-arc adjustment of Doppler network, etc. These projects have played key roles in the establishment and maintenance of Chinese geodetic datum, which also satisfied the necessity of national economy and defense.

Since 1980’s, great improvements have been achieved in satellite geodesysatellite laser ranginggeodynamics and the applications of inertial navigation in the institute. The institute was also very active in the establishment of national order A and order B GPS networksthe establishment of China gravity base net, etc.. The institute has been in charge of many projects, especially the national key projects, marine high-tech projects.  Many valuable research results were achieved.

The DGPS software developed by the institute was used in the data acquire of highways and roads with great success, which speeds up the update of geographic information. The high-tech project(863 project) titled “High precision under-water DGPS positioning and navigation system” was also finished by the institute, which can be used for under-water object trackingunder-water positioning and navigation and under-water engineering.

The projects “Joint adjustment between astro-geodetic network and Chinese GPS network GPS2000”(financed by State Bureau of Surveying and Mapping)  and “Demonstration system of technical cooperation in Galileo Project” (financed by  the Ministry of Science and Technology) were finished by the institute recently, which will promote the use of geocentric coordinate system in China and the applications of space techniques in China.

From 2000 to 2004, more than twenty projects with financial supports mainly from the Ministry of Science and Technology and State Bureau of Surveying and Mapping, including several high-tech projects and national key projects. These researches involved in different fields, such as geodesymarine geodesy and geophysics. Persons with special ability played key roles in the researches, who form a fundamental base for the development of the institute.

Staff

There are fifteen people in the institute, four people with Ph. Degree, eight with master degree. There are five professors, one associate professor and one senior engineer, and other project scientists. From 2000 to 2004, the institute have cooperated with several institutes in other countries, including person exchange. Two persons came back after finishing their post-doctoral researches in MIT and GFZ, respectively, who are playing important roles in the related research fields. There is one Ph.D candidate studying in Finnish Geodetic Institute.

Prof. Dang is the director of the institute. He finished his post-doctoral researches in MIT(massachusetts institute of technology) during 1999 and 2001. He has achieved several valuable research results related to GPS data processing and geodynamics. He is now one of the influential specialists in China.

Prof. Zhang has been in charge of several key projects. His research interests are related to several hot topics in geodesy, such as satellite gravimetry, under-water GPS positioning and navigation, etc. He was awarded preeminent person by State Bureau of Surveying and Mapping, and was selected excellent young people by the government in January 2003. He was also selected to be the person who takes the lead of scientific research of State Bureau of Surveying and Mapping.

Prof. Wen got his Ph.D degree from Graz university of technology in 1999. He worked in GFZ (GeoForschungsZentrum) Potsdam Germany from April 2001 to June 2004. His main research interests are physical geodesy satellite altimetrylocal geoid determinationwavelets and multiscale models.

In recent years, there are three undergraduate students got their master degrees from the institute. There are two Ph.D candidates and two students pursuing for master degrees. Besides there are two Ph.D candidates by cooperation with Shandong technical university, Liaoning university of engineering and technology, respectively.
